Downer EDI Case Study:

Downer EDI Works specialise in providing a variety of services for the continued safe operation of essential civil
and rail infrastructure. In Australia they have over 2100 dedicated staff operating from 90 sites and offices.
Late last year Yarra Trams organised the renewal of existing tram tracks between Inglesby Road and the junction
of Riversdale Road and Burke Road. Yarra Trams requested that Downer EDI Works complete the contracted works
between the hours of 2am Saturday 1st November and 5.30am Monday 3rd November 2008 (Melbourne Cup
Weekend). Five hundred metres of double track tram track renewals had never been completed in such a short
period of time.
OnlineRail has an extremely good reputation for their expertise with Tram works. Gary Wilkinson, Construction
Manager for Downer EDI Works, has previously worked with the OnlineRail team on other projects and specifically
contacted OnlineRail to request our assistance for his Melbourne Cup Weekend job.
Downer EDI Works was faced with a number of project specific challenges and OnlineRail was able to assist to
ensure that the works were completed well within the specified time frame and to standards required. As with all
tram works, specific skill sets and experience are mandatory and OnlineRail (despite having two tram jobs
running the same weekend), were able to field teams for both projects that allowed both clients to achieve their
goals and projects on time.
In addition to providing the majority of the workforce for the track works of this project, OnlineRail also ventured
on-site on the Sunday of the project, to provide all staff on-site (OnlineRail staff and all other contractors) with a
BBQ lunch.
